2017 Black Ankle Estate

2017 Black Ankle Estate

A complex, full-bodied wine that dances across the palate. Smooth, elegant, and easy drinking, yet with plenty of juicy acidity and firm tannins that showcase the delicacies of this wine. It's flavors and aromas tease the senses: dark fruits, ripe plum, chocolate, pepper, tart red fruits, tobacco – the long, lingering finish will stay with you long after the wine is gone.

Blend:  59% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
From our first bottling at Black Ankle Vineyards, we had the goal of creating a wine of extra depth, concentration, and intensity that could age for many years – we just needed our young vines to age enough to make that happen.  That wine would become our signature wine, the best that Black Ankle can produce.  Our 2017 vintage is the third rendition of the Black Ankle Estate and it was harvested just two years after our initial release of this wine, giving the vines more time to age and strengthen.

Winemaker Notes
Each year, we ferment and age all our varieties separately, trying to make the best possible wine from each lot.  Only at blending time do we decide which barrels will end up in which wine.  Every year when we sit down to blend, a few barrels will stand out above all the others for their depth, complexity, and richness - the really knock-your-socks-off wines.  In many years, these become the backbone of our core wines -- Crumbling Rock, Feldspar, Slate and Leaf-Stone, because we need them to make those wines as interesting and delicious as we want them to be.  In really spectacular vintages, however, we have enough great barrels to be able to siphon off the very best to create something extraordinary, and those barrels are set aside to become the Black Ankle Estate.
